Healthy Chicken Shawarma
Homemade Healthy Chicken Shawarma
Ingredients:
For the Chicken:
2 teaspoons of Baity Shawarma spice blend
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (sliced into thin strips or bite-sized pieces)
2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
2 tbsp plain yogurt
1 tbsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
2 garlic cloves (minced)
1 tbsp shawarma spice mix (from above)
Salt to taste
For the Garnishes and Serving:
Pita or flatbread
Sliced tomatoes
Sliced cucumbers
Sliced red onions
Fresh parsley (chopped)
Tahini sauce, garlic sauce, or a yogurt-based sauce
Instructions:
1. Slice the Chicken:
Slice the chicken breasts into thin strips or bite-sized pieces. Cutting the chicken before marinating allows the flavours to penetrate more deeply and evenly.
2. Marinate the Chicken:
Place the sliced chicken in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish.
In a bowl, whisk together the yogurt, lemon juice, minced garlic, the shawarma spice mix
Pour the marinade over the sliced chicken and toss to ensure all pieces are well coated.
Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 4 hours for deeper flavour.
3. Cook the Chicken:
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
Once the oil is hot, add the marinated chicken pieces to the pan in a single layer (you may need to cook in batches depending on the size of your pan).
Cook the chicken for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and fully cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (75°C).
Once cooked, remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
4. Assemble the Shawarma:
Warm your pita or flatbread in a dry pan for about 30 seconds on each side.
Place the cooked chicken pieces in the centre of the flatbread.
Add your favourite toppings: sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
Drizzle with tahini sauce, garlic sauce, or a yogurt-based sauce for extra flavour.
5. Serve and Enjoy:
Roll or fold the pita to create a wrap, or serve it open-faced as a sandwich. Enjoy your homemade chicken shawarma!
Tips:
Chicken Texture: Slicing the chicken before marinating helps the meat cook faster and ensures each piece is packed with flavour from the spices.
Make It Spicy: Adjust the cayenne pepper to your liking, or add fresh chopped chilies to the marinade for an extra kick.
Marinating Tip: For the best results, marinate the chicken for a few hours to allow the spices to really infuse the meat.
Enjoy your quick and easy homemade chicken shawarma with delicious flavour and the perfect balance of spices!
