Sumac Lemonade
Sumac Lemonade is a refreshing, tangy, and slightly tart drink that combines the citrusy zing of lemonade with the unique, fruity tartness of sumac. It’s a popular drink in the Middle East and makes for a wonderful, thirst-quenching beverage, especially on hot days.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup dried sumac berries (or about 2-3 tablespoons ground sumac)
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 4-6 lemons)
4 cups cold water
1/4 cup sugar (or more to taste)
Ice cubes, for serving
Lemon slices, for garnish (optional)
Fresh mint leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Make the Sumac Infusion:
Mix the ground sumac into the warm water and stir to dissolve it. Let it steep for a few minutes, then strain.
Prepare the Lemonade:
In a large pitcher, combine the sumac infusion (or strained sumac liquid) with the freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Add the sugar to the pitcher, and stir until it’s fully dissolved. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking, adding more sugar if you prefer a sweeter lemonade.
Add the Water:
Pour in the cold water and stir to combine. You can adjust the water level based on your preference for the strength of the drink. For a more concentrated lemonade, reduce the water; for a milder drink, add a bit more.
Serve:
Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the sumac lemonade over the ice.
Garnish with lemon slices and fresh mint leaves for an extra burst of colour and fragrance.
Enjoy:
Serve the sumac lemonade chilled and enjoy the refreshing, tangy flavours.
Optional Add-ins:
Rose water or orange blossom water: For a floral note, add a few drops of rose water or orange blossom water.
Cucumber slices: Add cucumber slices to the pitcher for an extra refreshing twist.
Honey: Instead of sugar, you can sweeten the lemonade with honey or agave syrup for a more natural sweetness.
Serving Suggestions:
This Sumac Lemonade is great for summer parties, barbecues, or as a refreshing drink alongside a Middle Eastern-inspired meal like grilled meats, mezze, or salads.
If you want to make it even more special, serve the lemonade in large glasses with crushed ice or top with a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy version.
This Sumac Lemonade is a delightful and tangy drink that’s perfect for quenching your thirst and adding a Middle Eastern twist to your beverage repertoire!
